How long does "coming soon" last in Camillus? On West Genesee Street this October, it depends on which sign you're looking at.
Several businesses between Fairmount Fair and Township 5 are using some version of that phrase right now. One has a presale with a printed deadline. One has a corporate store number, finished framing and no opening date. Two smaller tenants have opening windows on a property directory. Another first appeared in local news as under construction in October 2023. They all say roughly the same thing, and they're on very different timelines. The way to tell them apart is to look at what has actually happened behind each sign.
Four Signs, Four Different Clocks
Here's where each one stood as of mid-October 2026. They're listed by how much concrete evidence there is behind the sign, not by how much they're talked about.
| Business | Location | What the business itself says | Latest outside marker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planet Fitness | 5301 W. Genesee St., Ste 600, Camillus Commons | "Coming soon," with a pre-grand-opening sale | NYS Labor Department list, updated Oct. 13: end-of-October opening |
| Trader Joe's | 3515 W. Genesee St., Fairmount Fair | "Coming Soon," opening "TBD" | WSYR, Sept. 25: contractor hoped to finish by November |
| Nashcards, Kinney Homecare | Township 5 | Listed as opening October 2026 and fall 2026 | Township 5 directory |
| MOOCHI | 174 Township Blvd, Township 5 | "Coming Soon," no date | NYS Labor Department list: still under construction, no date |
Planet Fitness Is the One With a Deadline
Of all of them, the Camillus Commons gym has the most concrete commitment. Syracuse.com reported in September that the club at 5301 W. Genesee St. was scheduled to open at the end of October 2026. The New York State Department of Labor's Central New York expansions list gives the same end-of-October projection.
The best evidence is on the gym's own page. The Planet Fitness Camillus Commons page still labels the club "coming soon." But it's already selling early memberships through a pre-grand-opening sale, and those offers expire October 31. A company selling memberships against a fixed date has put money behind its timeline. The page doesn't list a grand-opening date, so the end of October is still a projection. It's a projection with a business reason to hold, though.
Trader Joe's Has a Store Number and No Date
The Fairmount Fair project shows how much the outside evidence can say when the company itself won't give a date.
In May, it was still a rumor. Syracuse.com reported on May 5 that there had been no official announcement. Ashley Furniture's Northeast area manager told the outlet that the Camillus store was downsizing to make room for Trader Joe's. The same story said Benderson Development, which leases the plaza, went to the Town of Camillus planning board in March for façade and parking lot changes after taking back 12,500 square feet from Ashley to create a new tenant space. The tenant's name wasn't disclosed to the board. Because the change was retail to retail, the planning board chair said the tenant only needed a building permit and signage when ready, with no return trip for site approval. That's why the project never had the public hearings that usually tell neighbors what's coming.
The company confirmed it with an announcement dated May 19, 2026, which lists a "Syracuse, NY—Coming Soon!" store at 3515 West Genesee St. with the opening time given as "TBD." The Trader Joe's store finder lists the Camillus site as location 570, separate from the existing store, location 537. Until now, that Erie Boulevard store in DeWitt, open since 2014, has been the only Trader Joe's in Onondaga County.
The physical progress is easier to see than the corporate timeline. WSYR reported on September 25 that the store is going in between Marshalls & HomeGoods and Ashley Furniture. Ashley had reopened earlier that month in its smaller footprint after several months closed. The station reported that a Trader Joe's spokesperson had no timeline to share. According to the Town of Camillus Codes Office, plumbing and framing were complete, and a contractor at the site told a codes officer the team hoped to finish the entire project by November.
A November finish is a construction goal. It isn't a store opening, and the company still lists the date as TBD. What has changed since spring is that every step that depended on someone else is done. The space has been carved out, the furniture store has reopened next door and the framing is up. For anyone who shops at the Wegmans in the same plaza, the wait now depends on the grocer's own schedule.
Township 5 Is Filling In With Smaller Tenants
A little farther along Route 5, Township 5 has been adding businesses one at a time, and most of them came with less fanfare than the grocery store.
Zaman Coffee House opened its Camillus café with a soft opening on Thursday, July 2, WSYR reported. Syracuse.com described it as following the business's success in North Syracuse, and said it welcomed its first customers that morning.
SkanWell, at 240 Township Boulevard, Suite 40, has been taking appointments and advertised a one-time grand-opening promotion with an October 23 expiration on its website. The Township 5 directory lists Nashcards as "opening October 2026" and Kinney Homecare as "opening fall 2026." Both are stated plans, and the directory promises official grand-opening dates later.
These openings follow a different pattern from the Fairmount Fair project. A café or a wellness studio moving into an existing storefront has less to build and less to announce. The directory listing and a brief promotion are often the whole public record, and the opening comes before most people have heard about it.
The Sign That Has Been Up Since 2023
MOOCHI shows why a "coming soon" sign alone tells you very little.
In October 2023, Syracuse.com reported that the mochi donut shop was opening at Destiny USA and that a second location was under construction at Township 5. Three years later, MOOCHI's contact page still lists the Camillus shop at 174 Township Blvd as "Coming Soon," with no date. The state Labor Department page still lists the Township 5 shop as under construction, also with no opening date.
The public record has no newer construction milestone, hiring notice or promotion with a date on it. That puts MOOCHI in a different category from the gym and the grocery store, even though all three signs use the same words.
The Dates That Are Fixed This Season
For the rest of the fall, the firmest dates in this part of Camillus come from the town, not from retailers. The Camillus Parks & Recreation 2026–27 brochure has public skating at the Shove Park Ice Arena, 1 Shove Park Drive, running from October 11, 2026 through Friday, March 12, 2027. Weekday sessions run 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday sessions run 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is cash only. It's free for preschoolers and seniors, $3 for ages 5 to 17 and $5 for ages 18 to 59, with skate rental extra.
Holiday-season changes worth noting before you go:
- November 3: no public skate
- November 11, 25 and 27: public skate 2 to 4 p.m. only
- November 26: arena closed for Thanksgiving
- November 30: no public skate
- December 12: public skate 2 to 4:30 p.m.
- December 23, 28 and 29: public skate 2 to 4 p.m.
- December 24: no public skate
- December 25: arena closed
The town asks skaters to check camillusrecreation.com or call the leisure line at 315-487-2170 for the latest hours and cancellations. The town also holds the Town of Camillus/West Genesee Hall of Fame induction on Sunday, November 15, at the Camillus Elks Club. A meet-and-greet starts at 2:30 p.m. and the induction at 3 p.m.
