Once bike rentals end in late October, the county's off-season rules switch the 20-foot East Shore Recreation Trail from a skating and cycling lane to a shared path where leashed dogs can walk. Then, for about six and a half weeks starting November 21, Lights on the Lake shortens the day by closing the whole park at 4:30 p.m. Taken together, the late-fall park in Liverpool is built for someone on foot, often with a dog, who gets there before late afternoon.
October Takes Away the Visitor Season First
The wind-down starts before the trail rules change. The Salt Museum ended its 2026 public season on October 11. It had been open Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., since May 7. Group and school tours also run only May through October.
Next comes a one-day closure. Onondaga County's 2026 road-closure notice shows Onondaga Lake Parkway closed Sunday, October 18, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Great New York State Marathon. The county says event times can change. The park's calendar lists the marathon weekend as October 17 and 18, with the 5K and 10K on Saturday and the full and half marathons on Sunday. If you remember Parkway Sundays, this isn't a revival. That program was canceled in 2014, and the county's 2026 list has no recurring car-free Sundays.
Then the wheels leave. The park's rental vendor, Cuse Cycle, rents bikes and skates through October 31, weather permitting. In this final stretch after Labor Day, hours are 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. The Parks Fall Photo Contest runs at Onondaga Lake Park through the same date.
So by Halloween, the museum, the rentals and the evening rental hours are all done for the year. The trail rules change the next morning.
November 1 Rewrites the East Shore Trail
From April through October, the East Shore Recreation Trail is meant for wheels. The county describes it as more than two and a half miles of paved trail, 20 feet wide, "ideal for in-line skating and bicycling." In peak season, walkers may use it only if they don't get in the way of wheeled users, keep within three feet of the shoulder and walk no more than two side by side. Dogs aren't allowed on it at all in those months. All summer, the only trail open to dogs is the Shoreline Walking Trail.
From November through March, the rules change:
| East Shore Recreation Trail | Shoreline Walking Trail | |
|---|---|---|
| Length and surface | 2.5+ miles, paved, 20 feet wide | 2 miles, foot traffic only |
| Who has priority, April to October | Skaters and cyclists; walkers keep to the shoulder | Walkers and runners |
| Dogs, April to October | Not allowed | Allowed on a 6-foot leash |
| Who uses it, November to March | Wheels and pedestrians share it | Walkers and runners |
| Dogs, November to March | Allowed with walkers, not with bikes or skates | Allowed on a 6-foot leash |
| Plowed in winter | Yes | No |
Two rules hold all year. Leashes can be no longer than six feet. Cyclists and skaters can't bring pets, which is why the off-season dog permission covers walkers only. The park is also carry in, carry out, and that includes dog waste.
Snow Decides the Rest
The plowing row in that table explains the rest of the season. The county plows the East Shore Recreation Trail and leaves the Shoreline Walking Trail alone. Its guidance is direct: "When it snows please use the plowed East Shore Recreation Trail."
That fits with the November rule change. The plowed trail is the one that opens to leashed dogs in the off-season, so after a snowfall, the cleared route is also one where dog walkers are allowed. In July that same pavement belongs to skaters, and a dog isn't allowed on it.
The trail day also gets shorter. From April through October, trails are open from 6 a.m. until half an hour after sunset. From November through March, they close at sunset.
Several other spots stay open on reduced winter schedules:
- Wegmans Good Dog Park is open year-round, seven days a week, from sunrise to sunset.
- Griffin Visitor Center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., November through March, with no weekend hours listed.
- Onondaga Lake Skate Park goes to weekdays only, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., from November 1 through March 31, depending on weather.
- Wegmans Playground is normally open dawn to dusk during park hours.
That last listing comes with an exception.
The 4:30 Park
On the trails page, the county puts it in one line: "During Lights on the Lake, the entire park closes at 4:30pm." The playground page says the same thing. Wegmans Playground closes with the rest of the park at 4:30 while the show runs.
The show's own staffing calendar lists operations from November 21, 2026, through January 4, 2027. The page calls those dates approximate. If those dates hold, the 4:30 closing covers about 45 days. That's shorter than last season, which NewsChannel 9 reported as running November 17 through January 12, roughly 57 days. The show starts four days later this year and ends eight days earlier, so the early closing comes off the calendar sooner.
These are the dates the official Lights on the Lake site has posted for 2026–27:
- Saturday, November 21, 6 a.m. The Lights 5K walk on the East Shore trail near the Salt Museum. Registration is required.
- Sunday, November 22, 6 a.m. The Lights 5K run, on the same trail and also with registration.
- Monday, November 23. Opening charity night, $5 per carload.
- Tuesday, November 24. The Doggy Drive-Thru, $5 per carload.
- Thursday, November 26. The Liverpool Turkey Trot, listed on the county parks calendar at Onondaga Lake Park.
- Monday, November 30. Salute the Troops night, free for active-duty, reserve and veteran personnel with military ID.
- Monday, January 4, 2027. Closing charity night, $5 per carload. Cars enter at 6790 Onondaga Lake Parkway.
Regular admission and nightly hours for 2026–27 hadn't been released yet. As of its October 1 update, the official ticket page said only that tickets "will be on sale soon." Last season's numbers are a reference point only. NewsChannel 9 reported $10 per vehicle Monday through Thursday, $20 Friday through Sunday, tickets bought online in advance, and show hours of 5 to 10 p.m.
The displays are also in the park outside show season. The county's crew calendar has setup running from September 1 to November 20 and takedown from January 5 through March 31, 2027. Show crews are working along the park for most of the off-season, not just the weeks it's lit.
Where the Winter Trail Still Runs Out
The off-season rules make the paved trail a walking route. It still doesn't go all the way around the lake. Syracuse.com reported in July that you can currently walk from the state fairgrounds, around the north end of the lake, to the end of Onondaga Lake Park. From there, some walkers and cyclists keep going on the shoulder of the Parkway.
According to that report, county lawmakers are moving ahead with a plan for the last 2.3 miles between the park and Syracuse's Inner Harbor. County transportation commissioner Martin Voss described three phases. The first starts in the park at Bloody Brook and runs down the Parkway toward the railroad bridge. The second is a new bridge from Murphy's Island over the tracks and Ley Creek, continuing past the salt ponds. The third is a link under the CSX railroad bridge. Finished, the trail would connect almost 18 miles of paths. Voss also told legislators the county believes the road under the bridge should be narrowed, because "we know there's already volume issues in Liverpool."
The schedule isn't settled. Both outlets said construction could start as early as spring 2027. NewsChannel 9 reported that the start depends on an administrative judge approving a right-of-way change. Syracuse.com reported that the design still needs state and federal approval, that CSX won't let the county cross its tracks, and that no completion date was given. For this winter, the plowed East Shore trail ends where it ended last winter, inside the park.
